Chai Masala - Spicy Chai Lemonade

Lemon-Ginger Chai

It has been cold...I mean cooooold!! This has us all (especially me) warming ourselves with warm beverages, soups and stews. Florida, of course never gets as cold as the rest of the United States during winter but I promise you I saw frost on a few occasions in the morning and in my world that means wearing gloves, wool socks and crawling even further under the covers. It also involves hot beverages throughout the day as I desperately try to keep warm internally. That almost always means lots of chai (spiced Indian tea). Every morning I brew one large pot which fills the air with beautiful floral aromas and promise of warmth.

Stepping away from a traditional chai I wanted to have chai in a different way that was not only just as beneficial but tasted great. I call this a chai lemonade. The lemon and lemongrass add wonderful citrus notes that pair exquisitely with the chai masala. What is exciting for me is that this tea is non-caffeinated, dairy free and can be served cold as well for when the warmer days come around. It is a perfect all year round everyday beverage with so many possibilities.....chai cocktail anyone?
